Let's talk about purging

What is skin purging? A purge process usually occurs when the skin fights back against your new skincare ingredients. Skin can be stubborn at times and when met with a new ingredient;  will try anything to cause you issues and doesn't want to be cured and so in most cases, will put up a good fight before eventually backing down and letting the new ingredients take over and treat your skin problems.

It is completely normal for your skin to have a small reaction when you start a new skincare routine, company, product or ingredient. No matter how gentle the inkey list, you are always bound to see a purge when trying something new. (like wearing in a new pair of shoes). Not everything is always smooth sailing straight away.

A purge process can be anything for small breakouts, bumps, excess dryness or with stronger ingredients, peeling.

Here at Give Me, our Skincare is gentle but effective and whilst most of customers rarely see a purging period, it wouldn’t be uncommon for it to happen. Here is a run down of some of our key skincare ingredients and what a purge could look like for you.

Retinol - Retinol purging often shows up in the form of redness and with a few spots of acne - This will clear up 2- 4 weeks after initial use then the benefits will start to show!

Hyaluronic Acid - Hyaluronic Acid can cause purging symptoms such as under the skin breakouts and occasionally a small amount of peeling. This can last anywhere from 2-4 weeks.

Witch Hazel - Witch Hazel is an incredible firming ingredient that can sometimes show signs of dryness whilst in its purging process, purging will last 2-3 weeks, stick with it and the results will be FIRMnominal ;)

Niacinamide - Niacinamide has a very small purge process, typically around 1-3 weeks! It is also often rare to experience purging from niacinamide but if you do you may see some patches of redness and small spots appear.

Vitamin C - Vitamin C is a skin superfood but can cause some issues before solving all the problems in the world! With Vitamin C you may see some redness and feel tighter and dryer, this can last anywhere between 2-6 weeks but trust the process and you’ll thank us later!

Salicylic Acid - Salicylic Acid is incredible for keeping the skin clear but has been known to make it worse before making it better. These symptoms shouldn’t last too long and a purge period isn’t forever!

Whilst purging is normal there are some tips to try and minimize the purge!

  • Work out the best routine for you! This will take a little bit of trial and error.
  • Mix up your routine, changing up your ingredients and having a break in between products will help.
  • Always make sure to track your skin's progress, progress photos are super helpful!
  • Try and stick with one brand as they will have formulated their products to integrate and will have super handy tips and videos to show you how to use each one.
  • If you believe a purge is lasting too long, message the brand or a healthcare professional for advice.

TOP TIP slowly increase hyaluronic acid into your skincare to minimize the purging symptoms, start with every other day and increase this into your regime!

And Remember to trust the process!
