As Sandi Toksvig Stands Down, who is in the Running to Take the Bake Off Baton?
Great British Bake-Off Presenter Sandi Toksvig saddened the public yesterday with the news that she would be stepping down from the Channel 4 Baking show after taking over the role with co-star Noel Feilding when the show moved from BBC 2 in 2017.
According to sources close to Sandi, the departure of the 61-year-old comedian did not come as a surprise to the Bake-off team, adding that there had been ‘tensions’ on the show leading Sandi to hiding in her dressing room most of the time.
Reports have revealed that she has been ‘desperate’ to leave as the presenter had been unhappy for a while now.
Speaking to the Sun a source said: 'The atmosphere on set had been lively and upbeat, but as time went on Sandi seemed to be enjoying it less and less and just didn't want to get involved.
'She spent most of her time hiding out in what looked like a bijou shepherd's hut she'd had set up, knitting on her own — and quite often grumbling about it all'.
In a closing statement, Toksvig said, ‘Unusually, I am departing from the Great British Bake Off so I can spend more time with my other work. As my waistline will testify, Bake Off is an all-consuming show.
'Spending time with Prue, Paul and Noel has been one of the great pleasures of my life. These are friendships which I know will continue beyond the confines of television.
'Bake Off is a wonderful programme which has already proved it can happily withstand a change of hosting personnel.
'The reason for that, of course, is that the true stars of the show are the bakers themselves. I wish everyone well.'
Former co-stars of GBBO took to twitter to expresses their sadness for Sandi’s parting,
Fielding tweeted yesterday: 'I feel like Tom without Jerry ! Mick without a Keef :( gonna miss yooooooooooooooooo and the wonderful times we got to play together in the tent!
'Double acts are rare and magical beast and working with you was a pleasure x x x all my love Mr Noel x'
Pru Leith tweeted: 'I have absolutely loved working with Sandi, she's been a brilliant host and enormous fun and I am in awe of how hard she works juggling so many different projects.
'We shall be lifelong friends way beyond the tent. #GBBO #sanditoksvig.'
Mr Hollywood also paid tribute to Toksvig. He said: 'It's been great fun working with Sandi. We will miss her, but I hope that she will get time to visit us in the tent when we film later this year. She will always be part of the Bake-Off family.'
But as Sandi walks from the role, who is in the running to take the Bake-Off baton and present alongside comedy genius, Noel Feilding?
